What is black fungus? | Symptoms | Knowledge Hub

Black Fungus:

Mucormycosis is a type of fungal infection that is known to be quite rare, but apparently, it is being reported by the doctors in Indian hospitals that Mucormycosis disease is being found in Covid-19 patients. This disease is alternately also called " Black Fungus".

On Thursday 20 May 2021, the Government made it compulsory for Indian states for reporting those cases in order to initiate IDSP (Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme).

Mucormycetes are a group of fungus/molds that are present in the environment like soil, plants, and decaying fruits and vegetables which are responsible for the black fungus infection. Dr. Nikhil Tandon said, this mucor also spreads through the air, but healthy people would not be caused any problem by it. Although it can also even enter our lungs the chances are very low.

This disease has some bad effects on those people suffering from breathing problems at their lungs and the peoples having medicines for different diseases such as cancer, diabetes, organ transplant person or hospitalized ones. Black fungus patients also require surgery of their eyes, nose, and even the jawbones in order to stop the infection from reaching the brain which is life-threatening.

corona virus

Doctors stated that the covid-19 patients even the recovered ones who are treated with steroids (life-saving treatment for covid-19 patients) and others kinds of anti-inflammatory drugs are at a chance of being triggered by this disease.

Diabetes is a great problem as it reduces one's immune system, which easily gets attacked by coronaviruses thus in order to counter this situation steroids are used by doctors.

Hyper-immune response takes place in the body of covid-19 patients which is the dying factor for the patients. This hyper-immune response results in inflammation of the lungs and different other organs which causes organ failure.

This steroid helps in reducing inflammation of the lungs of covid-19 patients and also reduces the damage that might occur when the immune system does its job of fighting against the coronavirus. This results in making the immune system a little weaker, doctors think that this weakness in the immune system might be the cause of triggering of 'Black Fungus' in the body.
